Fun Summer Picnic Themes

George McLoughlin

July is National Picnic Month. Whether you choose to picnic in your Philadelphia area backyard or conduct a small gathering of family and friends in a park somewhere, it’s time to celebrate getting out of the house, enjoying warm summer days, and delighting in having a meal outdoors.

Summer cookouts and picnics are often dominated by hamburgers, hot dogs, and the like. While traditional picnic fare is sure to please any crowd, you should have fun with picnic food. Think outside of the picnic basket!

Here are some creative picnic themes that will make your outing special and memorable!

Country Farmhouse Summer Picnic Theme

Turn your backyard into a country farmhouse for the day complete with farmhouse décor such as checkered tablecloths, bales of hay, rustic farmhouse signs, and galvanized metal accessories. Set the tables with burlap table runners, distressed dinnerware, mason jar drinking glasses, and wooden flatware. A country farmhouse menu would not be complete without:

  • 18 hour smoked brisket
  • BBQ chicken
  • Black Angus burgers
  • Molasses baked beans
  • American potato salad
  • Sliced watermelon

Southern BBQ Summer Picnic Theme

Take a trip down south without even leaving your backyard! Downhome Southern style is all about no-fuss hospitality. Decorations can be as simple or fancy as you want, but the real focus of any Southern BBQ party is the food. Southern-style BBQ is famous because of the variety of meats, sauces, seasonings, and woods used to smoke the meats. It’s all about smoky, wood-fired meats and savory sides such as:

  • Carolina-style pork shoulder
  • Grilled chicken with tangy, sweet BBQ sauce
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Corn on the cob
  • Coleslaw
  • Peach cobbler shooters

Build Your Own Taco Bar Summer Picnic Theme

Summer picnics don’t have to be about traditional BBQ or cookout fare, throw a build-your-own taco picnic! Let’s face it, everybody loves tacos, and it’s even more fun when your guests can build their own from an assortment of components. Go all out and make it a Mexican Fiesta to remember with fun, colorful decorations or go with a red, white, and green theme that denotes the Mexican flag’s colors. Whatever you do, make sure the taco bar is well-stocked with:

  • Steak, ground beef, or chicken
  • Mexican rice
  • Charro beans
  • Guacamole
  • Pico de gallo
  • Tortilla chips and salsa
  • Churros
